The Health Ministry today clarified that the 24-year-old student from Zimbabwe is not suffering from the Ebola virus disease (EVD) and that there are no such reported cases in the country to date.
Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the private college student in Sarawak had a fever, sore throat and cough on Sept 13 and had been treated at the Kuching Hospital for respiratory tract infection.
“At that time, the patient was stable. Also, Zimbabwe was not listed by the World Health Organisation as a country infected with EVD.
“The student had not travelled overseas and had no contact with any EVD patients for a period of 21 days before he fell sick. Following this, we conducted our investigations and found this is not an EVD case,” he said in a statement. He said the ministry was working closely with all the relevant agencies and ministries, including the Education Ministry, to ensure there were no such cases here.
The ministry, through the National Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre, will continue to monitor the situation and keep the public informed of any developments,” he added.
