Ramadhan Kareem!
In less than a week, Muslims all over the world will be celebrating the blessed month of Ramadhan. It is perhaps the most anticipated month in the Islamic calendar because of all the blessings Allah has promised for those who perform the fast and other ibadah or good deeds during this time.
For doctors and healthcare personnel (as I am sure for many other professions out there) it is a time of increased personal sacrifice as we maintain our daily hectic routines in busy hospitals, clinics and health centres whilst continuing to adhere to the teachings of our faith. It is also a time when we are bombarded with the many different “ailments” that the fasting month can bring. From patients who no longer take their prescribed medicines regularly because they are not aware that their drug dosage can be adjusted during Ramadhan to any number of stomach ailments due to excessive overeating and over-zealous Ramadhan buffet binging.
It is important to remember, that our health is of great importance during Ramadhan as it is during the rest of the year, perhaps even more so, as good health will help Muslims to perform their ibadah comfortably and optimally.
In conjunction with the upcoming month of Ramadhan, The Malaysian Medical Gazette would like to wish all its Muslim readers Ramadhan Kareem! and encourage everyone to ensure their health and well being during this blessed month. We will publish several articles regarding Ramadhan during the course of this week.
So, whether you are up early for Sahur or simply to catch the latest World Cup match this Ramadhan, remember, eat in moderation (Ramadhan is not “eat as much as I can, when I can” month), continue your medications (ask your doctor/pharmacist regarding dosage adjustments) and let us all strive to keep healthy this Ramadhan.
“Ramadhan Kareem! Allahu Akram”
